Founder & Principal Designer

"The best rooms I've designed all started the same way: with a conversation."

What you collected on a trip, the chair you can't part with, the color that keeps catching your eye. Design, done well, is just paying close attention. That belief is at the heart of everything I do at La Sprezzatura.

The name comes from an Italian concept I've always loved: sprezzatura, the art of making something difficult look effortless. Behind every seemingly simple design choice are hundreds of considered decisions. The right depth of a sofa. The layering of textiles. The way light falls across a room at four in the afternoon. I want my clients to walk into a finished room and feel it was always meant to be this way, even though nothing about it was accidental.

I came to interior design through an unusual path. I spent years in the luxury rug and carpet industry, developing an almost obsessive knowledge of fibers, weaves, and artisan production. That kind of knowledge lets me source a room-defining rug that will look as beautiful in twenty years as it does today. That foundation in materials and craftsmanship shapes how I approach every project: start with what you can touch, and build the room from the ground up.

Design is personal, and the details give people away. When a client hesitates over a fabric swatch, I notice. When someone's eyes light up at a particular blue, I remember. It shows up in the welcome package I send them, wrapped with ribbon and a handwritten note. The best design, I think, comes from what people don't say out loud.

Based in Northport on Long Island's North Shore, I bring a blend of coastal ease and metropolitan sophistication to every project. I speak English and Spanish fluently, read and understand Italian comfortably, and have enough Portuguese to get by. Whether it's a full home renovation or refreshing a single room, I approach each space as a conversation: your life, your history, your style, refined through a designer's eye.

What I believe

Design Philosophy

Sentimental design

Your home already has a story. I work with what you love: an heirloom chair, a piece of art, a rug from your travels. The best rooms don't erase the past. They honor it.

Three choices, not thirty

Too many options paralyze. I listen first, then present a curated few that I believe in completely. When I show you something, it's because I've already done the editing for you.

The details you can touch

A room is defined by its materials. The spring of wool underfoot. The weight of a linen drape. The grain of a walnut tray. I choose pieces for how they feel in daily life, not just how they photograph.

Comfort is not negotiable

Beautiful spaces must also be livable. A room you're afraid to use isn't well-designed. It's staged. I want you to kick off your shoes and sink into the sofa. That's success.

Background

Rug & Textile Expertise

Years in the luxury carpet industry gave me deep knowledge of fibers, artisan weaving, and material sourcing, from hand-knotted Persian to custom-milled broadloom.

Northport, Long Island

Based on the North Shore and serving clients throughout Long Island and New York City. I volunteer with the Northport Historical Society and draw inspiration from the area's coastal character.

Three Languages

Fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian, with conversational Portuguese. I can also recite and explain the meaning of a number of Italian arias, which is either a party trick or a design qualification, depending on who you ask.

Beyond the Studio

When I'm not designing, I'm usually cooking. Gourmet meals for family and friends are my other creative outlet. The same instinct that layers textures in a room layers flavors on a plate.

In their words

Client Voices

"We gave Elizabeth a living room we'd been avoiding for years and a vague idea of what we wanted. She came back with three options, each one better than the last. The room we ended up with feels like it's always been this way. That's exactly what she promised."

— Client, Cold Spring Harbor

"What impressed me most was how quickly Elizabeth understood our taste. We'd worked with two other designers who kept showing us things that felt wrong. Elizabeth nailed it on the first visit. She has an intuition for what people actually want to live with."

— Client, Oyster Bay

"Elizabeth is the most organized person I've ever worked with. Every timeline was met, every detail was tracked, and she made what should have been a stressful renovation feel completely manageable. I've already referred her to three friends."

— Client, Manhasset

"I was nervous about the budget, and Elizabeth never made me feel like my project was too small. She gave our guest bedroom the same care and attention I've seen other designers reserve for full-home renovations. The room is perfect."

— Client, Lloyd Harbor

"Elizabeth actually listened. She asked about how we use the space, what bothers us, what we love. By the time she presented her ideas, it felt like she'd been living in our house. That level of attention is rare."

— Client, Huntington Bay

"We've done three projects together now and I genuinely look forward to each one. Elizabeth has become the person I call before I buy anything for the house. She's our taste filter."

— Client, Lattingtown

Let's create something beautiful together.

Every project begins with a conversation. Tell me about your space, and we'll figure out the rest together.
